“I’m trying! I’m trying! Hold on a minute! I don’t wanna spill my coffee!”
“You’ve got all that room next to you.”
“Oh, sorry Emm, didn’t know.”
Sarah checked to see how much room she really did have. Sometimes her sister could be such a stinker, but by placing her hand on the smooth wood and reaching out, she could tell there was more than enough room for their coffee and brownies.
When both sisters settled themselves on the bench Emily sighed with deep satisfaction, “This was a good idea – just us girls – what do you remember about this place?”
“I remember I could see.”
“It’s been a few years I know, but really, what do you remember?” (Sisters can ignore certain things and get away with it.)
“I remember the lake in front of us and the island of trees in the middle and the boats we used to rent. People must be out there now.” Sarah’s deep sigh was not of satisfaction but one of longing and Emily knew it.
“We’ll get one later this morning before it gets too hot. We’ll take turns driving.”
“Emmy, your crazy! I can’t do that!”
“No one will notice and I can tell you when to turn and everything. The boats can go slow too, remember. It’ll be fun!”
“They’ve got their Water Watch Dogs out there Emmy, and besides how are we going to get past the two on the dock that get our boat?” They aren’t blind!”
“We’ll switch when we get out there. It’ll be so cool!”
“I don’t know – maybe – I still think you’re crazy!”
“Ok then, listen to this. What’s that behind us – your favorite.”
Sarah paused a moment, “The waterfall. We passed it coming out here …… tell me, does it all look the same?”
“You tell me!”
“What do you mean?”
“What do you remember and I’ll tell you if it’s the same.”
Sarah stayed quiet for a few seconds before she answered. She was beginning to feel a little angry at the direction this conversation was going.
“It’s not working Emmy.”
“What?”
“It’s not working I said. I can’t see the waterfall.”
“But you can … “see.” What color is the waterfall?”
Not wanting to answer, Sarah turns away from her sister, but Emily nudges her on,
“White spray.”
“The rocks in the brook?”
Sarah closed her eyes and leaned back, “Different colors of brown and gray, and the water….when it flows over them …... is beautiful. It just makes me remember what I can’t see Emmy – and how much I miss it.”
“And….?”
“And what?” she sullenly answers.
“The trees, don’t you want to know about the trees? (Another sister ignoring tactic)
“They’ve grown huh?”
“We’ll go check them out later.”
“Now how do you purpose to do that dear sis?”
“This is Disney. Everybody finds all kinds of places to explore or lay down anywhere they want. Do you think they’ll notice a couple of goofballs hugging a tree?”
Laughing now at the vision of their exploration among the trees, they continue their virtual reality sightseeing tour of the magnificent Wilderness Lodge behind them – with its authentic Totem Poles, the smell of wood, its two fireplaces, and the Tee Pees hanging from the enormous ceiling casting a soft glow upon the lobby.
“Time to get a boat Sarah?”
“Ok Emmy, but let’s make a pit stop first.”
Getting up, Sarah takes Emily by the elbow to be guided by the pool.
“Emmy?”
“Yeah?”
“When we go by the pool check NiNi’s bathing suit for me. She doesn’t think I notice.”
“Gotcha covered sis – been there done that before she left. Trish and I heard her tell you she’d pull it up – she knows. Besides, Trish is with her – she won’t get away with anything.
Yeah right, what are Aunts for? Sarah was thinking to herself.
“Hey Emmy?”
“What?”
“No offence but – I won’t need you guys one day.”
“No offence either but – you are sooooo right on that one!”
“And Emmy?”
“What.”
“On the way back, tell me all that you see?”
"Wanna stand on the bridge and do some more virtual sightseeing while we listen to the water fall?”
“Great idea, but one thing.”
“What.”
“No hugging trees till later ok?”
“Ok.”
“Emm ……. you said that tooooo fast.”
Sarah could “see” the smile on her sister’s face. She knew what it meant. As much as she loved her, she still could be a stinker sometimes.
