She arrived for work on Tuesday morning, a little before nine and was greeted by Dan Emil as she walked to her desk.
“Morning, Alicia! Sure is a pretty morning, isn’t it?”
Smiling, she replied, “Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! The leaves are beginning to change and the colors are like a beautiful rainbow, that never ends.”
“You sure know how to describe things, Alicia! Never thought of leaves like that!”
“Oh, maybe that’s the writer in me. I so want to be a writer! Real estate is fine but I sure don’t want to do it all my life!”
“Well, why don’t you take some writing courses? I heard that Park Central is offering writing courses this fall term.”
Her eyes looked distant and for awhile she could think of nothing to say and then, “Well, maybe I’ll check it out…But, for now, it’s off to work.”
When the day was done, she arrived back at her small apartment and went directly to a phone book. She looked up Park Central and made a call.
“Hello, Park Central. I would like some information about your writing classes.”
Later, she hung up the phone and shrugged her shoulders. “Well, that takes care of that! Two-hundred dollars for an eight week course! Can’t afford it.”
After a small dinner, she put away thoughts of being a writer but continued with a journal she began about a year ago and began writing a a mystery about an old crypt she saw when she visited a cemetary years ago.
She found that writing about the old crypt helped to take away the frustration of not being able to take the writing course and it was a way to express her writings about what she saw and felt.
As the weeks went by her job continued to go well and her story about the old crypt developed into something interesting and mysterious.
It was the middle of September when she saw an ad in the local newspaper advertising a writing contest. It read, “Fall Writing Contest: Enter Today.”
She decided to take the risk and after editing her piece, sent it in. Weeks later, the results were given in the paper. She couldn’t believe her eyes when she read the winning list. She was listed in Second Place, for her writing on The Crypt. She received a prize of $200.00—just enough to enter the writing course she so longed to take..
In the years that would follow, she would look back on that time as the real beginning of her writing adventure because after winning that prize, she went on to write many articles, and then gave a try at writing books.
It was the second book she wrote, “My brother’s Murder,” that brought her fame and fortune but it was also so sad that her success with writing would be about a brother who she loved so much and lost. But,it did bring a catharsis that gave her peace and a continued longing to write more, so much more…
