Brianna hugged her sister generously, lingering longer than normal, holding her tightly. “How are you, it’s been months since we’ve seen each other?” she questioned as she pulled away.
“I’ve been fine, very busy, but doing well,” Tam answered non-convincingly. “How ‘bout you?”
“Great, just great.”
“Are you hungry?” Tam questioned.
“Starved, I’d love to try that new place you told me about, the little Bistro,” Brianna replied. She was concerned about Tam but didn’t want to expose the concern until later, when the time felt right.
They enjoyed dinner. It was like old times, she saw the sadness in her sister’s eyes fade as tears filled their eyes from full-hearted laughter over the gimmicks they had experienced growing up. Old times at home filled their hearts with joy and they left the Bistro with full smiles on their faces.
The laughter faded as they walked to Tam’s dorm along the brightly lit path. The moon shone brightly and the trees swayed in the wind. Brianna enjoyed the walk and instinctively allowed her sister to find the strength within herself to talk to Brianna about her pain.
Before they arrived, Tam stopped at a bench, “Can we just sit here and hang before we head back to my room, do you mind?”
“Not at all, it’s a gorgeous night, I’d rather hang out here and chat, sounds great,” Brianna sat down and waited for Tam to join her.
Tam stood for a few seconds longer and with apprehension she finally joined her sister. “I almost messed up really bad, sis.”
“How do you mean?” Brianna asked while placing her arm across her sister’s shoulder and drew her closer.
“There was this guy…” Tam’s voice trailed off as she turned away from Brianna.
“You can tell me, sis, I’m here for you.”
“I really cared for him, you know. I thought he really cared about me. He was so smooth, a sweet talker,” Tam continued at a faster pace and the words began to pour out. “It all happened so fast, he just made me feel like I was the most special person and most beautiful girl in the world. Then there was this night…” Tam trailed off again.
Brianna waited though her heart was racing at the thoughts of what may have happened to her sister. Brianna pulled her sister even closer.
In tears now, Tam began to speak with small sobs filling her words, “It’s just I got so caught up in it, I almost gave myself away. After all this time I’ve spent committing myself to my future husband and this guy,…” she sobbed a little louder and hesitated, “…this guy, I almost, well I almost let him take all that away because I thought he loved me. How could I be so stupid Brianna, how could I let his fancy words get me so wrapped up that I was ready to give all of me to him in the moment…I just don’t understand…I just don’t know…”
Brianna held her sister as she sobbed until Tam couldn’t cry anymore. Then Brianna quietly questioned her sister, “So, what happened then?”
“I didn’t do it. I stopped him and told him I wasn’t ready. All of a sudden he broke into some rage, I had never even seen him mad before. He started yelling at me and calling me names,” tears begin to fill Tam’s eyes once again.
“It isn’t your fault and he wasn’t worth anything if that is all he cares about. God has someone special picked out just for you, I know it, I believe and I have faith that some day you will find each other. You made the right choice, sis, I am so proud of you, you really did the right thing. That guy is not worth your tears, I love you and you did great!”
Brianna then prayed silently and thanked God for giving her sister such strength to make the right choice and they sat quietly under the moonlight while Tam let the tension slip away while held in her sister’s arms.
