Worshipping the Lord is not a preliminary activity that we do because we’re supposed to, before we get to the more important part of the Word being preached. Worship IS the important part. Worship focuses on the King of Kings – honoring Him with all that we have. Our congregation has come to understand that as we hunger for God’s presence among us, and as we abandon ourselves to Him in worship, He responds. The Glory Cloud moves in. We are overwhelmed with His goodness.
You might be asking, “What does she mean by ‘The Glory Cloud moves in’?” I mean that God’s presence among us becomes so thick it can be felt. For most of us, this means we feel a peaceful weightiness, a heavy awe, in our spirit-man, and we sense that Jesus is very near. Some people experience physical sensations, such as weeping or laughing, because they are so touched with joy at the Lord’s love and goodness. Some of us see angels, either by an inner vision (a picture seen in one’s spirit) or with the open eyes.
I have never had an open-eyed vision, but I have seen angels among us in my spirit. My most unique vision of an angel was not at all what I was expecting. I had a preconceived notion that when angels attended church services, they solemnly stood around the edges of the room and watched us worship, perhaps with their hands raised in a dignified manner. But what I saw was a large angel dancing through the altar area. He was not gliding gracefully, as though he had been to Arthur Murray’s dance school. He was hopping and twirling, in complete joyful abandon. I have seen people dance before the Lord like that, but I certainly had no idea angels did. Angels do not want to be spectators only while we worship; they delight to join with us! They are joyful in the Lord. They have fun worshipping! If they enjoy worshipping the Lord Jesus like that, we can, too. Worship should be the most satisfying of experiences for both God and His people, not a boring activity that we do just because it is part of our tradition.
Yes, I know the preaching of God’s Word is also needed. I really love sermons, too. But it’s worship that brings communion of heart between us and the King. Lavishing our love on Him must come before all else.
