Of all places, this event, the one murmured about for eons now, is occurring right here within my walls.
I am just a humble cave, where normally only animals dwell, but not tonight. For some unknown but wonderful reason, these two people, obviously weary from their travels, entered this evening, and my stony heart beat faster immediately. I knew of the announcement not far from here from the legions of angels earlier, and was thrilled at the idea that this moment of connection between God and mankind was finally here, and near!
But to be chosen as the location! And to stand in solid witness of God's love! It's beyond anything my granite imagination could ever have dreamed up! Thank you, Almighty God, thank you!
As the Child enters the world, I want to quake with the magnitude of the joyous occasion, but I don't want to frighten the family, especially the Little One. Oh, how the prophets and the upright have longed for this moment, and it's finally here! I'm thrilled, but I can't cry tears of joy! I'm excited, but I can't jump! I'm forced to retain the wondrous nature of this night within my pores, and remember, remember, remember...
I, certainly, am the most blessed cave, and this night shall be my legacy forever, etched in stone!
Some thirty plus years later...
Today was a dark day for all creation, because God's Son died. We know God never does anything without a plan, and we have put our trust in Him, but today was, indeed, a dark day.
The earth shook and rocks split.
It was our way of expressing our grief at His death. We know His identity and usually are stoic with our knowledge, but only a week ago He acknowledged that we, the stones, would cry out if His followers kept quiet. Unknown to the people of this earth, we are emotional beings, capable of worshipping the only One worthy of our praise.
After His death, another cave accepted the lifeless body of our Lord, and it was unbearable--we all felt the wretched sorrow along with the other cave, and prayed for strength.
And then...
I have heard the news, certainly, and I willingly cede my position of most blessed cave to another now.
Within my walls, the Baby was born, reaching out His little arms to the lost world.
Within the walls of the other cave, after letting His arms be stretched out on a cross, the Man defeated death, once and for all.
