“Will night never end?” he mumbled to himself. “Was the dreamer right? “
The old man’s mind meandered back to the last time he stood before the Assembly of True Path many years before. It was his first Assembly and he couldn’t wait to glean from the wisdom of the Keepers and Speakers Guilds gathered there. But, by the end of the first day he was devastated. All the Keepers Guild seemed interested in was technicalities. And all the General Counsel and Head Speaker did was give impassioned speeches on the duties of all good people to support the United Federation.
The next day Enoch took the GRAV-LEV from Denver to Spokane. Once in Spokane he sought out a fellow Watcher who led him to his home of the last thirty years. No policeman or soldier challenged Enoch during his journey. There was no need to. Few who walked away from a ”free” city ever came back. As far as the United Federation was concerned it was good riddance.
It was here thirty years earlier, weary from his trip, he had found a small cave to rest in. As he slept, Enoch dreamed a most fantastic dream. He was standing on the rim of the canyon and looking out across a vast turquoise ocean. Though it had to be thousands of miles away he could see a tiny island like something one sees in a vid on World Net, sugar white beaches and lush green vegetation.
But it wasn’t the island that seared itself into Enoch’s subconscious. It was the image of a boy just a few years younger than himself. He was dressed in simple white clothes and sat laboring over some papers stretched out before him. Enoch looked closer and saw the papers were translations of various books of the true Word. They did not contain the empty self-serving tripe of True Path. These words literally danced with the energy of the Creator himself.
As he dreamed on Enoch saw the young man write a little more and then jump up in excitement. He ran to others like him and said he had an announcement to make. “It says to go into the world,” he shouted excitedly.
“Well, if the word says go, then we must go,” replied an older man.
The second speaker grew silent for a time and then whispered, “But who will go?”
At first no one answered. Feet shuffled and eyes looked downward. Then another young man spoke. “My name is Judson and I will go.”
He faded from sight in Enoch’s dream and was replaced by a being that defied description. The being picked up the papers, looked at Enoch and boomed, “When Judson comes Night’s End is near.” As the echoes of that majestic voice faded away all that remained was a sense of raw power and ultimate majesty.
And then, Enoch woke up …
That dream had been so long ago and so much had happened since. The Great Purge left little hope for light to dawn in this world. If you believed the news on World Net, nothing was left of the old Scriptures or their equally old ways. But had not God promised differently?
Enoch shifted in his cot and sighed. It had been so long since he dreamed of Night’s end. Sometimes he doubted but he never lost faith. A man named Judson was coming from somewhere far away living and powerful words that would bring an end to the stifling midnight that had settled onto the world.
Enoch smiled and whispered to himself, “I believe! Night’s end is near.”
