Plum tuckered out, the day is done,
Worn out from all my chores today,
Just got done takin’ weekly bath,
It’s time fer me ta hit the hay.

Look forward to a Sunday morn,
I’ll go ta church, I always do.
I’ll git ta see sweet Emma Jean,
Uh, well, and hear some preachin’, too.

I look around at all the folks -
Oh, there she is an’ all dressed up,
Could stare at her ‘til cows come home -
So perty I could a’most bust.

I sit one pew ahead o’ her,
The reason ‘cause, well I’m afeard,
I couldn’t take my eyes off her
An’ sermon I would never hear.

Plus right here I can hear her sing -
Her voice as perty as her eyes,
Cute little nose and I jes’ bet
Her lips are sweet as apple pie.

The music thet her voice can make,
The best I ever heard by far.
Sounds silly fer a growed up man,
But feel her singin’ in my heart.

The service done, say, “Howdy, ma’am.”
She blushes, says “Hi” back to me.
I ask if she will go next week
To neighbor’s barn dance, jes’ ta see.

She’s goin’, yes, I take a breath,
“So are you goin’ with a beau?”
She isn’t, stares straight into me,
Her perty eyes are all aglow.

It’s like the words snag in my throat,
Jes’ say, “Good day,” an’ walk away,
An’ now I prob’ly lost my chance,
I couldn’t find the words ta say.

The week goes by an’ here I am,
I feel bad, don’t know what ta do,
Feel too ashamed ta go ta dance,
Embarrassed what I put her through.

She wouldn’t like me anyhow,
A hayseed who can’t even dance,
Yet hear her singin’ in my mind -
Puts this ol’ fella in a trance.

Best gal there is aroun’ these parts,
Yep, nicest one I ever seen.
Well, I jes’ plain can’t help myself,
My heart is set on Emma Jean.

I’ll hurry up and do my chores,
An’ take an early bath I s’pose.
I’ll shave an’ I’ll get dressed up in
My Sunday go ta meetin’ clothes.

So nervous, look aroun’ fer her,
Oh, there she is, what do I do?
I feel all hot an’ fidgety,
An’ wish I had some straw ta chew.

She’s walkin’ right on up ta me,
Her smilin’ eyes put me at ease,
Starts talkin’, hear her perty voice,
She calms me like a summer breeze.

I have ta tell her I can’t dance,
An’ yet she doesn’t seem ta mind.
She smiles, we sit down instead,
This lady couldn’t be more kind.

On this here hay bale, sit an’ talk
Except when Emma stops to sing.
I certainly don’t mind at all,
I’m glad to sit here listening.

The dance is over and I ask
If she and I can share a pew.
Sweet Emma’s singin’ calmed me down,
I finally know what to do.

We go ta church and other things,
So proud to have her by my side.
I get ta know her more and more
‘Til love fer her I jes’ can’t hide.

Decide to jes’ go right ahead
An’ ask her father fer her hand.
I promise I’ll take care o’ her
An’ tell him ‘bout my stock and land.

Permitted, look into her eyes,
An’ git right down on jes’ one knee,
“I love ya more then summertime,
Dear Emma, will ya marry me?”

“Oh yes, dear Clarence, yes I will.”
I’m feelin’ all puffed up inside,
I can’t believe we’re gittin’ hitched.
Can’t wait to kiss my perty bride.

Spruced up the church for wedding day,
She made it sech a perty scene,
And now we’re here to say I do,
I git ta kiss my Emma Jean.

An’ now I have her by my side,
Love havin’ music in this place,
She sings when cookin, chorin’, too,
It puts a smile on my face.

I can’t believe how good I done
Ta git a woman with her eyes,
Her singin’ voice, kind heart, and yep,
Her lips are sweet as apple pie.
