Our years are filled with splashes of color, faint hues or brilliant flares, layer upon layer bringing us to new heights and new lows. At times the artists seem to work in unison, together creating a masterpiece of love and beauty. At other times there appears to be no rhyme or reason to the brush strokes, no unity of artists. The work is noisy, complicated, and painful to the canvas.
As time goes on our colors are muddied and dreary, smudged together, covering the beauty of the first stroke. We are no longer a fresh canvas, no longer worthy. We are a tainted piece, not a masterpiece.
We are no one’s treasure, simply a reminder of all that is dirty and unloveable. We are discarded, thrown into the streets to be trampled and broken, unwanted by craftsmen. In the dark streets the sky begins to pour down, mirroring the vast sorrow flooding our soul. We scream out in anguish, “We are alone! We are afraid! Please do not leave us to die, dirty and unworthy! Can we not be made new again? Could we not be clean once more?”
A hand reaches down through the dark and caresses us, soiled and ugly as we are. A deep crimson begins to wash over us, flowing freely from the hand of the Master Artist standing before us. An inexpressible joy floods us as we feel the old stains falling away. A fire burns brightly as He purifies us, making us clean. And then He steps back and smiles.
Taking a deep breath we dare to look at what He has cared to create.
Once again we are pure canvas, His Masterpiece in the making. We are not empty, nor are we stripped blank. In wonderment we see He has not erased all of our colors! Instead He has simply glorified them, taking care to eliminate the useless stains yet keeping the lovely shades, bringing them together to blend with the scarlet hue of the Love poured out on us.
True art is a reflection of the Artist. In the Chief Artisan’s hand we find life, in His imagination we are free to become works of art, no longer empty or stained. Instead we are to bear the image of the Creator, timeless portraits of a Love everlasting.
