Angie, their twelve-year-old daughter, had come home from school in tears from the incessant teasing of her peers. Sarah didn’t know what to do about any of it. “I wish mom was still alive.” She thought, kneading the dough even more vigorously. “She would know what to do.”
Sara didn’t know what had made her suggest the she and Angie bake cinnamon rolls together. She didn’t bake often, and after a full day of work she was exhausted. But she had said the words, and Angie had agreed. As they rolled out the dough into a thin layer, Sarah remembered making cinnamon rolls with her mother when she had been Angie’s age.
She had had the same problems with other kids teasing her because of the glasses she wore. She remembered the sound of her mother rhythmically pounding on the dough as she worked it into the right consistency. She remembered pouring her heart out to her mother while she watched her rolling out the thin layer of dough. Her mother’s voice rang clearly in her ear, “What do you care what those children think of you? God knows exactly who you are, and he loves you. That’s all that really matters.”
Sarah found herself repeating the same message of love to her daughter, who seemed to relax just a little. After a talk about things at school, Angie went to her room to do homework, in much higher spirits than she had been in for weeks. As she spread on the melted butter and cinnamon and brown sugar, she remembered her mother teaching her to spread the ingredients easily as she once again poured her heart out about the argument she had had with her fiancé.”
She could see her mother in her mind’s eye, putting a hand on her hip and breathing a sigh, “If you are going to marry this man, you need to decide right now that you will support him no matter how much his decisions irritate you. It’s hard to submit to your husband, but God has told us to do just that. Now you go back there and let him know that you love him and support him, no matter how mad you are.”
Chastised by the distant memory, Sarah finished frosting the last of the cinnamon rolls. She loaded two onto a plate and carried it into the living room, where her husband sat gloomily perusing the classifieds. She handed him the plate and started gently massaging his tense shoulders. “God has a plan for you, honey. We just have to trust that he will make it clear soon.”
David looked over his shoulder at her, and then he took hold of her arm and pulled her into a warm embrace. When he released her, she was surprised to see tears in his eyes. “Thank you, I needed to hear that.” They sat in comfortable silence, eating their steaming cinnamon rolls.
He caught the odd grin on her face and asked, “what?”
”I just realized that mom isn’t gone after all.” At his curious gaze she continued. “No, it turns out that she’s only as far as the nearest batch of home made cinnamon rolls.” He smiled with understanding and wrapped his arms around her tightly.
