She walked over to her desk and pulled her five-year-old, pre-school body up onto her chair.
She sat on her knees and, with much effort and a determined strain on her face, she was able to scoot her chair up to her desk.
She set all of her supplies down and reached across the desk to turn on her lamp. Once the lamp was on, she sat back in her chair for a moment, happy at all she had accomplished so far.
The time of celebration over, Suzie went to work.
She spread the construction paper out on the desk and grabbed the round-edged pair of scissors. Carefully, she cut out the paper in the shape of a heart, a look of purpose and resolve on her face.
Once the heart was completed, Suzie grabbed the unused paper, wadded it up into a ball, and tossed it in the wastebasket by her desk.
Next, she took two colors out of the box. She used yellow to color a border around the slightly disfigured heart-shape.
Another smile appeared on her face as she set down the yellow and grabbed the blue.
With five-year old determination, she wrote something on the paper.
When finished, she folded the heart in half, jumped off her chair, and took herself and her new creation out of her room.
She stopped halfway down the hall and suddenly turned around. Quickly, she went back into her bedroom and put away all of the material she had been working with. Positive that the room was in ship-shape order, she began her quest again, towards the living room and her mother and father…
She could hear the sound of the television as she approached. Her father was the first to look up.
Suzie smiled as she jumped into her father’s lap. She turned to her mom.
“Look at what I made, Mommy!”
Suzie’s mother took the half-shaped heart in her hand and opened it, admiring the effort and the artwork.
“It’s very pret…” She couldn’t get the words out as the letters on the paper jumped off of the red background and into her heart.
The words in blue read…
“my mommy the bestest teacher i love you”
Suzie’s mom leaned over, and kissed her daughter, doing her best to hold back the tears.
