Within this hollow, wooden spirit
God’s breath has come to dwell,
Breaking through its fertile soil
Fruit of life’s eternal well.
Tender, newborn leaves
Verdant, spring from hardy stem
Hopeful buds appearing
Drawing strength from Him.
The fragrance of her perfume
On south wind gently flies.
Crimson petals, unfolding
Growing strong and wise.
The fullness of His presence
Christ’s aroma fills the air.
The scent of His loving kindness-
Lovely, precious, rare.
But soon, sunlit days are veiled-
Leafy fronds begin to wither.
Cool and breezy nights-
Rosy petals slightly quiver.
Bitter north winds blow-
Her blooms fall to the earth.
A distant memory now-
The blossoms of her birth.
It seems but just a moment
Beneath the Father’s watchful eye.
Her woody stem grows silent-
So thorny, lifeless, dry.
Against the blustery cold
Its howling winds, forlorn-
In sickness, grief and pain
Her beauty, wistful mourn.
But whether she lies dormant
Or is graced with delicate blooms
The sweetness of Christ’s fragrance
In the Father’s garden, looms.
Reviving her broken spirit,
Waters flow from His crystal river.
Swirling about her grasping root,
His Spirit, the Life-giver.
In the freshness of His mercy
Renewed, her sweet bouquet.
Perennial essence of life
The garden’s break of day.
An aroma pleasing to the Lord
Like the scent of falling rain
Spreads to all the earth
The knowledge of his Name.
But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. – 2 Corinthians 2:14
