Existence is the expression of divine love, the moment by moment existence of finite creatures ensured by the continuing, necessary care of the infinite. Every moment is contingent and every moment is sustained in the grace and love of God.
Since He first hovered over the face of the deep at the moment of creation, the voice of the Spirit has been the ever sustaining presence. But what does “ever” mean to a finite being? We are touched by eternity in that an infinite God would speak and we exist in a divine intimacy that is both desirable and necessary. That this necessity for us is ordained as the necessary commitment of our Creator is a realization both comforting and astounding.
How do we know that it is true? There are no creatures in this world more capable or aware than we; yet only a madman or charlatan would fail to realize that we did not create ourselves and do not sustain our own existence. Something outside of us, something much more than a nebulous impersonal “it”, must sustain us by a power more deliberate and intentional than chance. A moments serious consideration tells us that only an intelligent personal being could and would design so elegant a thing as the creation of which we are a part. Only His constant sustaining care could maintain that existence.
Whoever would encourage hateful acts, even killing others, and would think he serves God does not know and has not ever known the intimate love of the infinite. Though he walks in the mist he is blind to the spring that gives rise to it. He does not care to know, choosing blindness in favor of some sense of self righteous power which is destined to bring him eternal death. Of all men, such a person expresses ingratitude; though he may claim to know God, he continues to trip over Him not recognizing the voice.
In any endeavor, to have words without faith is to own nothing. Essence is the heart’s desire, the source of the soul’s pleasure. Essence is the place of knowledge beyond words which are the path that leads us there. Who does not know that the words “I love you” are mere cruelty when not sincere? For the hope that these words bring, answers to a need so deep that to extinguish it is the power of death.
The fact of our existence is the Creator’s whispering “I love you”, every breath the continuing expression of His commitment to the promise of eternal life, a divine amen on the value of the gift. When at once we realize that: “For in Him we live, and move and have our being”, life is that tenuous and tender surprise that should ensure our joy. (Acts 17:28a NIV)
