He felt the explosion in his chest before he heard the sound.
The heat oozed deep inside as he fell heavily to the ground.
There were muffled sounds and flashing lights, in random, unclear guise,
appearing in a sway of flux, before his glazed and tearing eyes.
He heard some words in whispers, others sounded like a crashing wave,
and he felt icy-cold all over - like he was buried deep, inside a cave.
Faces hovered over him, but they were all strangers to his mind.
“Oh my God”, he thought one voice had said - it sounded almost kind.
As the pain reached its crescendo, his vision ebbed into the night.
A canopy of darkness shrouded all - save one errant wedge of light.
He felt he might be dreaming as warmth inside him spread,
But with the sound of music, he dismissed his sense of dread.
Was this heaven? - Had he died? - Oh, Lord, how could that be?
Just moments ago he was alive and well - then - what did he see?
A Mustang cruising slowly past - and through a window - a gun?
The drive-by shooting happened way too fast - and now was harshly done.
His first reaction was to run far away and fast - but then someone spoke.
“It‘s not your time - you must return.” - Was this some kind of joke?
Startled by the celestial voice and somewhat terrified,
he stared in silence at the sight - a herald of God glorified.
Then the light began to disappear and the pain returned full force.
An E.M.T. said he would be okay and, “It could be so much worse.“
The words took time to register and settle in his head,
“You’re lucky, son, for a minute there, you were actually dead.”
His focus finally cleared a bit, and he saw blood pooled everywhere.
He presumed he was in shock at least, but he felt so unaware.
It seemed God wasn’t ready for him yet - judging by his abrupt release.
Did He have a purpose? - Would these questions never cease?
He wasn’t certain - he didn’t know - but one thing was for sure,
he would not forget the second chance no matter how obscure.
And he would choose the peace of God that dwelled within him now,
and share it freely with those he could - never more to disavow.
