Peter was happy to see Ananias approaching. Ananias had promised money from the sale of a piece
of land for the church..
These were hard times with the Roman soldiers everywhere looking for any mistake, or illegality by
Roman law, that a Jew might make. Possessions were even worse for the Jew did not know when the
Romans might take everything one had.
"Hello Ananias," Peter called out.
Ananias said nothing. He laid the money at the feet of Peter and stood up.
Peter saw immediately why Ananias said nothing. The promised amount of money was not there.
Turning to Ananias Peter said, "You lied. Even worse than lying to us you also lied to the Holy
Ghost. Why ?"
Ananias had no answer.
Peter continued, "It was yours while you owned it. You could do what you wanted with it. And
after you sold the land the money was your to do with as you pleased. And you promised it. But now I
see that you have lied to us and to God."
Ananias fell down dead.
Young men rose and, wound him up, carried him out and buried him.
Great fear came on all that saw and heard these things.
After awhile, the wife of Ananias, Sapphira, came in not knowing what had happened.
Peter asked her, "Did you sell the land for a certain amount ?"
Sapphira said, "Yes, for that amount."
Peter said, "Why did you and Ananias agree together to hold back some of the money, and tempt
the Holy Spirit'?
Like Ananias, Sapphira had no answer.
Then Peter said, "Look, the men who carried out Ananias and buried him are at the door."
Then she fell down and died, and was taken out and buried.
Great fear came up on the church, for it was obvious that God had caused their deaths.
Peter turned to those present and said, "We should not lie, and, we should never lie to God."
