After being in Thailand for several months two Hmong girls visited our home. As my husband asked them about the village they came from they shared that no one in their village was a Christian. The girls knew about Jesus and had had Christian teaching, so he asked them if they were Christians. The oldest answered, “I would like to be.” With joy he led her in a prayer of repentance and an acceptance of the Christian faith. She then led her younger friend in the same prayer and confession of faith. John remarked to me later that he felt he had harvested where others had already sown.
A year later a similar incident happened in the Philippines. John was conversing with a young woman whom he had met recently. When she learned that he was working at a seminary in Manila, she asked him if he was a Christian. He answered, “Yes, are you?”
“No, but I would like to be.” This time John was able to harvest again where he had not sown. The young woman’s brother- law had done the sowing in her life.
The Apostle Paul taught that in Christian ministry one sows, another waters, another reaps the harvest. Jesus also taught the same principle in John 4:37-38 (NIV), “Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
This verse and John’s story gives me renewed hope. It is easy to become discouraged when I don’t see quick results in my efforts to share Christ. This verse implies that sometimes my job is just to sow. God will often allow someone else to reap the harvest. And the reverse is true. Sometimes God allows me to reap what others have worked hard to sow and water.
Prayer: Father God, please help me to be faithful whether I am sowing or reaping. Amen.
