Her mind spun into overdrive, even though she had two months’ notice. She would clean and scrub, she would allow three days for baking, she would finish those neglected jobs in the garden, she would … there was no end to the things she would do.
“Now, don’t you go trying to do everything before we get there,” Julie had said on the phone. “We’ll take care of everything. We’ve booked the whole motel complex nearby, and you won’t have to worry about anything. It’s your birthday, and we want you to relax and enjoy it.”
They think I’m getting old, and can’t do it anymore, Lynda thought. But I’m only going to be seventy, that’s not old. And I’m fit and healthy, and Tim and I are able to manage most things.
“Relax,” said Tim smiling, as they ate dinner. It was an odd meal, as Lynda pulled different things from the freezer, unable to decide in her excitement. “I suggest you do as they say, and just enjoy the visit. They’ll be here for two whole weeks, so there will be lots of time to catch up and enjoy them all.”
Lynda had the globe on the table beside her plate.
“I just love this thought,” she said, tracing her finger across countries and oceans. “They are all so scattered these days, and here they will be coming from here, and here, and here.” She jabbed her finger in various places. “All coming home at the same time, all together in one place. What a treat!”
Days passed in a happy daze as they prepared and anticipated the family gathering.
“You know,” she said one night to Tim. “This is making me think of eternity. I can imagine the excitement Jesus must feel as he anticipates the time when all his family will be home. He welcomes them now one by one, but one day we will all be there, together. From every tribe, language and nation, from all parts of the globe, all together at last. What an incredible gathering that will be!”
Next day as she went about her work she couldn’t help singing one of her favourite songs. “We are gathering together unto him, we are gathering together unto him. Unto him shall the gathering of the people be, we are gathering together unto him.” Tim smiled as he listened from another room.
“Thank you Lord, for family gatherings,” she said as she went to sleep. ”Thank you for the future gathering when we will all be around your throne, all home at last.”
