In another city, Brianna was similarly floating on air as she stared into her closet. The most gorgeous hunk had invited her to go to a movie. She chose a pair of bling enhanced jeans, and a pretty tee. Sexy sandals completed the outfit. She straightened her blonde curls into a long do. The movie was “R” rated, and Brianna knew she should refuse to go in. Her desire to be with Mr. Cool overruled her better judgment. Just this once, what could it hurt?
The teens were not alone in rolling the dice in order to be cool, or “in”, or successful or well-known.
Mr. Brad Patterson sat in front of his computer in his dimly lighted office while his wife and children slept. He knew the sites he was pulling up would contaminate his mind. It would break Mollie’s heart if she could see him. He was sure if she walked in, he could turn off the screen before she got around the desk. He was playing Russian Roulette, and he didn’t realize that all the chambers were loaded.
In yet another city, Ms. Ashleigh Langley faced a different choice. She was a personal assistant to a handsome, young executive. They traveled frequently to conventions where Ashleigh was required to accompany the man to black-tie events. She barely realized as she chose her gowns that she was thinking of her boss’s admiring looks. Liquor flowed freely at these events, making it easier to engage in ever more dangerous flirtation. Ashleigh was sure she was strong enough to keep things at bay. What chances she was taking!

Greg’s decision to remain at the party could cost him big time”. It could result in addiction, arrest, a record, a ruined reputation. He could end up with the exact opposite of the acceptance he was seeking.
What might be the result of Brianna’s decision? She could lose the respect of Mr. Cool. He might believe that if she was okay with this flick, she would also accept certain behaviors that were not even on her radar when she accepted his invitation. Her parents could lose their trust in her decisions, resulting in a loss of privileges she had previously enjoyed. Word gets around.
Brad Patterson might lose most of all in his game of chance - his wife and family, as well as the respect of his co-workers and employer. Possibly, he might find himself behind bars, or on probation, flipping burgers, trying to pay child support.
Ashleigh might find herself in compromising situations. Surely, she knew that. She was skating on thin ice. A moment of weakness could cost her a career and her self-respect, as well as the respect of others.

Gamblers all depend on luck to achieve the desired outcome. All of these people mentioned above certainly needed luck if their risky decisions were to not end in disaster. An old Swedish proverb says “luck never gives; only lends”. There is always a payday.
Of course, the Bible, the only true guide, has hundreds of verses that apply to the situations these fictional characters faced. Summing it up, we can look to Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”. (KJV)
