Still lying down, I opened sleepy eyes,
and stretched my hands above my head.
then folded them on my chest in quiet prayer.
Sitting up, I saw the fiery sun embrace the faded sky,
and the stealthy sea nodding with a wicked smile.
I heard the sound of muffled drums and looked out at
elephants on the run, whose only goal was higher ground.
I followed them as divine hands had roped them up.
I saw the rushing herd look down in fear and awe,
to see the frowning sea draw in a giant breath,
rear up on its mighty legs like an angry dinosaur,
roaring, beating and dashing to get its helpless prey.
Clinging to a swaying palm, I saw the heartless killer
quaff and spew, scream and smash, and kill and kill
till it could find nothing more to smash and break.
It then retreated with a virtuous face waving gently as of old.
Like a dismayed spouse cheated after years of trust,
the zombies stared in disbelief, looking for their lost.
Their trusted partner had purloined their lives of peace and,
transformed their haven into scalding hearts of grief –
They picked their dead, in place of shells and pebbles.
She was like a mother and a provider to some and
a haven of rest and peace for a great multitude-
Yet others sat on her shores to meditate, write, paint or
play and treasure whatever she brought from the depths.
Children wandered on her beaches picking pebbles and shells
that she happily brought in mighty loads for little hands to pick!
But today she grabbed those same litle hands and cruelly
dashed, suffocated and threw them to the elements.
"How could she do this to us?" was the question
that steamed out of every mind that had turned into a
boiling kettle of painful grief that spat out in angry puffs.
everyone was ‘betrayed to the core,’ but the age-old sea
went on as usual, waving happily to the ones she betrayed.
