Probably not the first time anyone has ever thought about this, but the lesson I learned about what true faith was, came to me while I was flying on an airplane. I’m not talking about the ‘Left Behind’ rapture scenario, or even the ‘praying while going through extreme turbulence’ moments. I was simply in my seat, heading for my destination as were all of the other passengers seated around me.
My test of faith came at the time in the flight when we were nearing our destination, and the airplane descended until we were underneath the clouds. We were still high enough and far enough from the suburban area that we were able to see the tracts of land that were divided into various squares and rectangles, separated by fences or rows of trees. You could make out an occasional rooftop of a house or barn, but the detail was still a bit hard to make out.
As we got closer in toward the city and the airport, and as the plane drew closer and closer to the ground, there were images of cars moving on the freeways, the same way ants move in a line toward their hills. Little blue swimming pools were everywhere, and depending on the number of cars in a parking lot, it wasn’t hard to determine where the mall was. Flying over water is fascinating if you’re able to see the people on the boats or fish that are swimming near the surface.
It was at this point when I saw the cars and the houses and buildings, I realized that each structure, every house and every automobile represented real people. I looked out at the expanse of the landscape and I knew I was looking at miles and miles of dwellings that held real souls inside. I found myself looking all around at my fellow passengers and realized they too were people, just like me, with their own souls, and were members of their own families. Their families had extended families, all having souls that our God knew personally. Before I could stop my brain from exploding with thought, I imagined all of the people in this entire world, and I couldn’t fathom the idea of one omnipresent being knowing each one by name, and that He knew the very numbers of hair on their head.
I write this with goosebumps on my arms as I recall the way I felt at that moment. In one instant, a blanket of doubt overwhelmed me, and scared me to death. Almost as quickly, a flow of comfort entered my heart, with simple assurance and three words that enveloped me, “He is God”. Of course I can’t fathom what He does…I am a human; His creation, His servant, yet His beloved. He knows the people seated to my left and to my right, personally. He knows every soul on board that plane, what they are thinking, feeling, and believing. Just believing He personally knows the couple of hundred people that are in this flying ship with me, is enough to make my thought processes overload. And then to realize He knows every single person on the planet beneath me. He knows each and every person on the other side of the globe, in the cities, in the mountains, in the forests. He created them all. They are His.
Oh my goodness, what a Mighty God we have. And He is holding and loving us all, and by faith, I believe.
