But they were wary. There had been many traps and already they had lost too many soldiers. Shai thought back to his last conversation with his wife a few hours earlier.
She had gone bed alone yet again, and she was concerned.
“I had a dream,” she said. “I must have fallen asleep quickly and I saw a dove flying in your faces, you and your soldiers. I don’t know what it means, but had this feeling that you must take notice of that dove.” What did it mean? Doves in this area so close to the Gaza Strip were rare. It wasn’t likely that they would see one, let alone have one flying in their faces.
“I will stay awake and pray through the night,” she told him. “Take care and God will protect you.” Shai thanked God again for a godly wife and the way he had brought them together. He thanked God for Yeshua, but he knew most of the soldiers in his unit did not yet know him. Show them a miracle tonight, he prayed, so they will believe in you and know that you are real.
Shai looked again through his goggles. There was a little white shape in front of the grey stone building that hadn’t been there before. He called the others over to look and they peered closely at this new development. It was a bird, looking very much like a dove, but there was something about it that he couldn’t quite figure. Quietly they discussed it.
“That bird is sitting on nothing!” exclaimed Yosef. Shai looked again, and yes, that was it. The bird wasn’t flying as it should be, it was sitting quite still. And there were no signs of a fence or posts or anything it could sit on.
“That’s it!” he said. “It has to be sitting on something! We will find out what it is.”
The men advanced slowly. As they neared, the dove flew into the air, but by now they were close enough to discern the clear fishing line surrounding the building. They knew what to do. Two of the unit followed it and found it attached to an explosive device. If they had advanced into that line they would all have been blown to pieces. They disabled the device and went safely into the building. It had already been cleared, but there were signs of the weapons that had been stored there recently. They searched for tunnels until satisfied that there were none.
Mission complete the soldiers returned to their base. Their sergeant debriefed them about the night’s mission.
“It was God’s dove,” he said “that saved our lives tonight.” He asked Shai to lead them in a prayer of thanks, and the men went to their beds thankful to be alive, and thankful to God for his protection.
