The perfect friend is one who knows the worst about you
And loves you just the same.
There’s only one who loves like that and Jesus is his name.
His wonderful, wonderful name.
Even though young I knew there was something wonderful about that concept. That someone who knew the worst about me could still love me. As a child we feel we need to be ‘good’ to be loved. Even as adults we feel love needs to be earned; if people knew our hidden secrets perhaps they would no longer like us or love us.
When I think of what I would want in a best friend I think of loyalty, someone who has time for me, someone who can keep a secret, someone I can look up to. Maybe I need someone who will challenge me if I go off the rails.
Jesus is that person. He is always true, always there and always faithful.
That does not mean we don’t need human friends. Of course we do. And if we cultivate our friends among fellow-believers, we will have truly deep and lasting friendships.
And that brings me to the question – what kind of friend am I? Am I loyal and trustworthy, can I keep a secret and be someone my friends look up to?
As I allow Christ to be formed in me so that I show more of his character, God will make me a true friend.
