With eager enthusiasm, Melissa said “Mom, you really need to find out if your articles are showing up online. You never know how many people search for specific topics. It might surprise you. Check it out!”

“Sure --- Someday” I muttered in two single word replies with a chasm of silence between them. Fear of the unknown was creeping in and I don’t like creepers.

Melissa is far more tech savvy than I yet she had innate confidence in my ability to accomplish such a simple task.

There are many things I use my pet search engine of choice for yet when researching on topics. I never thought to Google myself. I wondered who would think of such a thing: obviously my darling daughter did. She travels the cyber highway like a state patrol officer knowing how to navigate the ins and outs of obstacles and bad sites.

Pushing her suggestion aside for months it eventually wiggled its way back to the frontal lobe in my brain. With great hesitation, I decided to exhume my strong-will buried deep beneath decades of doubts and fears to venture into the unknown cyberspace. Until now this idea sounded nice but who would really have me pegged on an Internet search? Plus, it’s not like I have a few free hours to scour the Internet to see if my name appears some place. Yet, in the recesses of my spotty memory her small voice reverberates. “Check it out Mom. You might be surprised.”

Nuzzling up to my laptop one bleak Sunday afternoon, I finally typed my name into the Google search bar. I was quite surprised at the many hits that came up. I also learned of others with my name. One’s occupation fascinated me. She is a fabric artist. I wonder what type of occupation that is and how it makes a living.

Getting back to me… I found several sites that took advantage of the Free to Share articles so I saved those pages in my Favorites. It’s always good to have a go-to place when needing to shore up sagging confidence and this was my new place for Good Stuff. A couple of my Free Reprint articles were also cited on various sites. Wow! What a booster shot to this writer’s doubtful state of mind. So it seems people really like my writing-enough so to place my articles out there for the world to see from their own websites.

During one of my quests for diamonds in the rough searches led me to a gold mine of sorts. A pastor commented on how he had been preaching for years on darkness and my article hit it on the head. A different pastor asked to post my article on journal writing with God on his website even though it was listed as For Sale. Checking with the experts at FaithWriters I learned it is very common for people to request such permission so I said sure. I have since changed that article to Free to Share.

Amazing stuff can be unearthed on the superhighway if we but dare to try to find ourselves out there. Another gold mine was to learn my indie published books are promoted on so many sites in a handful of countries. Finding these nuggets blew my mind. When royalties from these alternative distribution sites started showing up, I smiled bigger than a Cheshire cat.

My techy daughter showed me how to set up alerts so when something new on me is found by Google I will receive an email with the information. What a time saving idea.

If I may be so bold as to recommend that we all search for ourselves on Google, for fun, validation, or whatever makes you heart tick, to do so. A second challenge is to set up Google alerts so these diamonds of Internet exposure can magically appear in your inbox. Check it out!

I've done just that awhile back and discovered someone decided to use my "pen name CD SWANSON" for her books. She'd been an author before with her regular name... all of a sudden this past December, wrote a book and there was my name on it! It surprised me. I'm glad your experience was better. LOL.

Anyhow, this was a well written...and on topic...entry. I really enjoyed it.

Great job!!

God bless~

Interesting article. I have to admit I've never thought about googling myself. Wow! I'm impressed with all the positive results you found when you googled your name.

Well written educational article. Many could use the information you provided plus even the inspiration.

Towards the end you had a "you" that you might have meant "your". Spell checkers don't catch these.

It seemed the article may have flowed quickly from your fingertips and you knew what you were going to type and your fingers couldn't keep up.

Good work.
