Several years ago, I was on duty in the ob/gyn wing of a local hospital. I got a call that the ER would be sending over a young lady who had just endured a spontaneous abortion. The young mother had requested a full work-up for the unborn fetus which would include footprints and preparedness for burial.

I got the young mother settled in her room and then began the difficult task of caring for the fetus. It had been sent over in a white plastic bucket, (like restaurant pickles use to come in).

I opened the lid and reached inside. Gently grasping a hold of the aborted fetus, I lifted it up, out of the bucket, and laid it in the palm of my left hand. I stood amazed at the little body lying there…..so perfectly formed, I could trace each intricate detail from the little head to the tiny little toes. But there was no breath….and no life.

I took a small scrap of mesh gauze and made a little hat and placed it on the baby’s head. I took pictures for the mom, then carefully inked the tiny soles of the feet and imprinted the footprints on the birth certificate, then filled out the death certificate.

Right there in the palm of my hands, lay a life that had a beginning and an end, all in just a few short weeks.

***

God tells us in HIS word: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13) NLT

Life is a journey that will someday end;
Hearts will break….others will mend.
God alone holds the key that opens the door
To a lifetime journey until time is no more!

The beginning:
A child is created in its mother’s womb by God. HE knows the child from the inside out and has a specific, unique purpose and plan for the life that HE has given. However short or long that time may be, God is the giver and taker of life and we all have an appointed time to die. So for each of us there is a beginning and there will be an ending.

Our time here on earth is simply a time to come to know Christ personally, so that HIS will and purpose will be fulfilled in and through our lives, past, present and future.

The middle:
Once our journey begins we began to prepare for our ending. In other words, the moment we are born we are preparing to die and our souls will spend an eternity with our LORD and Savior in heaven; or with Satan in hell. There are no other options.

God chooses us, and then calls us by name to come to HIM, to trust in HIM and to submit and surrender our wills and our lives over to HIM in every aspect, each and every day.

Accepting God’s free gift of salvation is not a one time commitment, it is a day by day re-commitment and God intends for each of us to grow in our faith and in HIM daily.

Once we accept God’s free gift, HE then fills us with HIS holy spirit to lead, guide and direct us. He also gives us HIS holy word….the bible…..to use as our road map on this journey that we call life.

The end:
All things must come to an end but the good news is God has provided a way for all of us to have a happy ending. And if trusting in God, the end will actually bring a new beginning!

The good news is that God sent HIS only son, JESUS, to die on an old rugged cross over 2000 years ago so we might have life and have life even more abundantly!

Jesus paid for all of our sins, past, present, and future and all HE ask in return is to love HIM, trust in HIM, and surrender our lives and our wills over to HIM completely one day at a time, one step at a time, throughout our journey.

God’s word from beginning to end….. Genesis to Revelation…… gives us examples, help, encouragement, and hopes as we live out our daily lives and prepare for our ending.

But don’t take my word for it….pick up your bible and read, read, and re-read. Then daily ask God to help you and show you the way from the beginning ….to the end.

Oh my heart ached with the beginning of this entry, for the mother...and I loved how tenderly the Nurse took care of the tiny little "baby."

Beautiful job with the topic after the initial story which brings us to the "good news" overall.

Very well done.

God bless~

Well done, and a great take on the topic. A reminder to live our lives in light of our 'end' - eternity.

Your article was quite interesting. Many people might not know that a spontaneous abortion means miscarriage. I know because I nearly had one 33 years ago. My experience helped relate even more to the story with what the nurse was doing. Up carefully crafted this tragic event with sensitivity.

After your story was a beautiful lesson on the beginning, middle, and end phases of life reinforced with lessons from the Bible and words of wisdom from life. Great job. Keep it up
