TITLE: 9 Secret Nanas
By Carla Rogers

Stretching her arthritic fingers around the flour dusted counter top stand mixer, Mary Ellen heard “Well, someone is in early!”

“Pearl, someone has to be the first in!”

Mary Ellen giggled as she thought of how many times the nine friends have gotten together at four am to make their special pound cakes. Just a simple game of “Broads and Bridge” started the most extraordinary journey any of them could have dreamed.

Over the whirling of the mixer, Mary Ellen’s voiced raised, “Pearl, I never dreamed that our little mission project of helping others would grow into this! “

Pearl carefully dipped the eggs into the water. “You know, it was my idea for us to do our own laundry to save money. It seemed so hard that first month, but we were able to pool together $400 to help hurting people. Our husbands never noticed a thing. It is all worth it.”

Coming from the refrigerator, Mary Ellen bumped into Joyce splashing milk everywhere. “When did you get here?”

Joyce, as she wiped milk from the floor, chuckled. “Just now. I’ve just been listening to your conversation. We went from sneaking around town, eavesdropping on people to see who needs help. Now we have a Happiness Coordinator to help us find people! I never would have thought how this has grown.”

Pearl knocked the excess flour from the sifter causing a dust of flour to float to the floor. “Who would have thought our little Secret Nana’s mission project would blossom from four hundred dollars to having a web site. Look what putting action behind our dream of What-if-we-had-a-million-dollars game. It all starts with a little thought and a little ingenuity”

Lifting the heavy beaters from the batter, Mary Ellen agreed. “Don’t forget the blessing of having this restaurant kitchen to work in before hours. We didn’t always have this luxury.”

“I think the most fun part is the sneaking around. Finding people to help is easy, but sneaking around feels like Christmas all year long!” Joyce quickly measured the vanilla flavoring spilling some in the batter. “Our initial investment of four hundred dollars has grown into over nine hundred thousand dollars, almost to our million!”

The flurry of activity really begins when the other six Nanas come to help. These industrious Nanas make and package many pound cakes for the UPS man deliver to hurting people who need a lift. But these cakes are the main way they raise money to do the real helping; paying electric bills, giving blankets, and buying groceries and just a few of the creative ways they help people. Individual help for individual hurts.

They exit the restaurant before any of the other workers arrive. No one knows who they are. Who says women can’t keep a secret? This secret has been kept for over thirty five years, even from their own husbands. Their husbands didn’t even miss the extra money being spent to help others. .

The next time you wonder what you will do with a million dollars, think of the Secret Nana’s, and start off with finding ways to save your extra cash. It pays off greatly in heavenly treasures.

This fictionalized story is based upon a real ministry of the 9 Secret Nanas in the article on the Huffington Post.
