They tell me Iím beautiful
As a warning;
I must shield my eyes
Lest I provoke evil.
My beauty is a curse,
So I wrap my veil
Secure
And hide my face.
Only my eyes are exposed;
Ebony almonds
With curled lashes.
Careful to look down.

How Iíd love to spin
And spin and spin
And unravel like a spool of thread,
But I might feel bare
And want to wrap again
In the comfort
Of cool cotton silk fabric,
Draped in my favorite color,
Pale turquoise
Of an endless sky.

At the market,
A woman approached me,
And told me I am loved,
Words I havenít heard
Since my youth.
She risked her life
With these words
About Jesus
On her lips
In public.

I want to believe
In this loveÖ
That God could love me
Enough to die for me,
To believe
I was created,
Equal
With a purpose.

She compliments my abaya
And wears a covering too,
But tells me
To get to heaven
We must clothe
Ourselves in
His forgiveness;
All our hidden sins
Are exposed
In His eyes,
But we can
Be clothed
In His spirit
If we believe.

I may never see
This woman again
But her words
Wonít leave my heart.

My eyes look up,
Exposed
To the truth
And itís beautiful.

Your poem is lovely, and full of compassion for those unable to feel free and beautiful. Such a gift we take for granted.

Congratulations Francy on your well deserved EC win! I really enjoyed this! I have often wondered what must go through the minds of those poor unvalued women behind the veils. I love the thoughts you gave this one!

Excellent and sensitive approach to a topic that can be so divisive. Well-deserved HC.
Tracy Nunes 09/06/13
This was just beautiful. Would that we all be so courageous as to risk death for the life of another. Congratulations!
