The preserve was all a-twitter. The newest issue of the Eagle Observer just hit the roosts. The front page story was a riveting exposé by Fanny Falcon, the Observer’s celebrity journalist. It was sure to be nominated for another pouletzer prize.

Franny’s target was the local Vulture venue. She went underwing disguised as a Hawk. She was positive the Vultures would not recognize that she was actually a messenger. Her resulting story of the greed and corruption practiced by Arnie Vulture and his cronies was mesmerizing.

Unfortunately even with her disguise she never got very close to the group… they were a tight winged solitary committee that repulsed others. She mostly relied on tales from a few renegade vultures who were jealous of Arnie’s physical strength, and on some eagle-eyed minions who spotted suspicious activities surrounding carrion on the valley floor while they circled high above.

Franny visualized shakedowns, threats, shenanigans and mayhem. Most of the reported illegal activity focused on the vultures’ unseemly enterprise of feasting on corpses rather than the accepted activity proscribed for birds of prey, that is, hunting down live targets.

Nevertheless a powerful work of innuendo, supposition and creative wordsmithing flew from the tip of Franny’s feather pen. Based on her work, Arnie and his gang were captured and interred in the local aviary.

The notoriety Franny enjoyed was short lived. As her popularity grew and more birds recognized her, the cackling started:

“isn’t she the journalist that was suspended for eating her sources?”
“her writing is spectacular but she will turn on you in a second”
“I heard she plagiarized several stories so she could meet her deadlines”

When the rumors landed on her editor’s desk, Franny was fired.

Moral of the story: beware of exposing the lice in your brother’s wing while not noticing the parasites in your own.
