She was quite gangly, with legs spindly as a birds
Conversing was torture, she had no mastery of words
Her eyes, like headlights beamed with nature’s gifted treasures
Wildlife, butterfly ballets, winking stars gave her pleasure

Alone, but not lonely, friendships were rarely sought
Her heart already given to one who knew it not
Her plainness would not please him, most thought this girl odd
Perched on a sturdy limb, she admired Micah breaking sod

In her mind she wandered, though considered it fantasy
That she could turn the head of a man as fine as he
Wiping sweat from his brow, he gazed into the sky
Quickly she shrunk back, hoping he’d not seen her spy

For one startling second as she dared again to peek
She saw him blow a kiss which landed on her cheek
Falling from the lookout, bewildered, she swiftly fled
With all kinds of questions swirling ‘round inside her head

Dear God, if you’re listening, tell me is it true
Does Micah know the secret that I’ve only told to You
I’ve loved him since we met--my hair was tied in braids
Send me a sign,
that night is what she prayed

Her “Amen” was whispered as she drifted into sleep
Time slowly passed, but now His sign would speak
A full moon shed its light on a tall and muscled frame
She paused, then sighed as Micah softly called her name

“Rebecca, are you enjoying this warm and breezy night
Should‘ve called on you earlier, but now the time seems right
Been wonderin’ if you’d consider keepin’ company
With a plain and simple fella, such as the likes of me”

Her tongue was tied, she swallowed and discreetly blushed
Her heart skipped a beat as chirping crickets hushed
“Of course I’d have your company, no other man would do
I was just a tender child when I lost my heart to you”

Micah, feeling bold, expressed his thoughts to her aloud
“Your inner beauty makes you glow, and truly makes me proud”
Each possessed qualities bestowed by God--exotic gems,
“Strangely beautiful,” some would say, of the faith that nurtures them

Wonderfully woven poem...the characters, the romance, the emotion, presented in such a genuine and gentle way. If more marriages were based on faith and inner beauty, there would not be so many divorces! Loved this, such an enjoyable read!
