The performer sought to draw his listeners in,
Inviting them to join his happy song.
“Never fear,” said he, “if you don’t know the words,
Enjoy the melody, and hum along.”
Transformed, the room was filled with life and freshness;
Slowly, timid strangers’ voices grew strong.
Some quickly grasped the winsome words and phrases,
Others were content just to hum along.
Both talented and wise, the performer smiled,
Knowing the human heart’s need to belong.
Finding their place, some were still singing the words,
While others were gladly humming along.
So, when life’s purpose is dim, and you feel small,
When your place in God’s plan seems somehow wrong,
Remember, while some may know all of the words,
Fullness and depth come from humming along.
Fret not, our God, the heavenly Performer
Has written the music and leads the song.
He’s given some parts to the singing of words,
But thrills to those who keep humming along.
