Friday morning. A cock crows and a man weeps. Disheartened followers become deserters, the stricken shepherd’s sheep scatter. Pilate has written what he has written. A black sky from noon until three, like a centurion’s cloak thrown over the land. All is finished. The fire of fellowship dies out. Fizzle.
Easter Sunday. All is beginning anew. ‘A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me.’(1) A walk to Emmaus, a conversion near Damascus. A blue sky. The hot Mediterranean sun on the rutted cobbles of a Roman road. Sizzle.
(1) John 16:16 (NRSV)
