My mother and I passed a group of men, and I heard my name softly called, like a whisper on the wind. I turned and looked, as He knelt down and said, “Come, Little One, let me tie your sandal.”
I glanced up at mother; she was staring at Him as she nodded okay. I timidly crept toward Him. He laughed gently and said, “Come, do not be afraid.”
I stared at His hands as He took the time to tie my sandal. I then dared to look into His face, and into His eyes—eyes like I have never seen before or since—eyes that stirred something unforgettable in my heart.
Countless times, was I bushed off, mocked and ignored, as I attempted to share this encounter. They said I was such a small child that I imagined my name being called, imagined the stir in my heart and the pools of love in His eyes. But I did not imagine it. Not even my mother’s love stirred me in such a way.
I later found out His name. Who they said He claimed to be, why He came. And I knew it was true. Having Him touch me once was enough.
I heard the tale of them driving long iron nails through His hands and feet, affixing Him to a cross. I heard how His blood dripped, and how He was in such agony, yet asked forgiveness for His persecutors. How could so many laugh as they told this? Never could I mock Him, for somehow I just knew He did it for me—and for any who would believe who He was. I believed. One look into His eyes was enough. I pushed out the image of His torture on the cross, as often as I could, by remembering His hands as they so gently tied my sandal.
Now I am old, and I have been chosen to be a human torch for Nero’s garden. They are getting ready to tie me to the post. But this day of torture I will endure. Never would I deny Him, because I saw Him once—only once. It was enough to tie me to Him forever.
