War game:
young soldiers,
mothers’ babies.
Mercy
replaced with steel
and fire.
War game:
a husband,
a wife.
Promise
replaced with deceit
and lies.
War game:
an empty heart,
a half-empty bottle.
Hope
replaced with desolation
and desperation.
War game:
highest intentions,
a moment of weakness.
Childhood
replaced by parenthood
and responsibility.
War game:
honest work,
dishonest opportunity.
Integrity
replaced by greed
and fear of discovery.
War game:
a child on a playground,
and a bully.
The battlefield
need not be large
to be damaging.
War game:
order now
in time for Christmas.
Violence for fun.
Who needs
a Prince of Peace?
War game:
once a neighbor,
or a friend.
Truth
now tarnished by gossip,
and unkind words.
War game:
a seeking soul,
a searching heart.
Faith
challenged by the noise
of an unbelieving world.
War game:
the powers of evil,
and Jesus the Lord.
Victory
Healing
Hope
Reconciliation
Forgiveness
Peace.
The battle is won.
Love reigns.
Game over.
