Door’s open, they left it unlocked
praying heavy not to be caught
and nothing will be noticed missing
since I’ll be their very first thought!
Though skilled to go in and out
without a trace
I’ve been known to leave evidence,
chocolate on my face!
My flashlight now reveals
delicacies cleverly hidden
leftovers and I shudder
for what’s desired is forbidden!
Panicking, not sure what to grab
quickly I must make a decision
make not a peep, if anyone hears
it would mean hard labor and prison!
My appetite for this dangerous work
frightens me of late
seems I’m never satisfied
with the portions on my plate!
Suddenly, my skin gets clammy
I feel faint
brightness swallows up the dark
and my disguise as a saint!
I drop the jar of mayonnaise
pick it up with little tact
ashamed that I’ve been caught
in the very act!
But then as I slowly turn
I see a gleam in sleepy eyes
and wonder if all along
you’re in cahoots with the spies!
But then like notes in an angel’s song
you speak each heavenly word
though I find it hard to believe
with my plight you’ve concurred!
Allowing me to finally exhale
and be put at ease
while you whisper ever so low
I’m starving too, do we have any cheese?
