Opening my eyes, I see the beams of early morning striped across the wall. I close my eyes again and enjoy the rich smell of fresh ground coffee mixed in with the mouthwatering aroma of bacon frying. Soon, we will all be gathering to celebrate the holiday full of thankfulness, eating and football.
Laughter rises from downstairs as Mom and Grandma share remembrances of past Thanksgivings as they work together to prepare for today’s gathering. As I think back on the past turkey gatherings, I remember Uncle Remo dancing cheek to cheek with Aunt Marge by the table before he pulled her chair out for her. Then there was Cousin Danny who adorned each finger with black olives. Now that I think about it, Cousin Danny became a chef and doing quite well. I wonder if he still wears olives.
I hear the clank of the pans in the kitchen that will soon hold potatoes that will be mashed and sprinkled with a touch of paprika and a dab of butter, corn freshly husked, green beans fresh from the garden, and other delicacies. The smell of succulent turkey should soon fill my senses with an anxious hunger. My mother’s stuffing is the best with its pieces of fruit and chopped nuts mixed with spices that add to its unique flavor. It tantalizes the tongue to indulge in more. Oh, how I love this day!
With my eyes still closed, thankfulness washes over me as I recall the goodness of God. I have these joyful experiences in my life to remember and enjoy again. It’s difficult to open my eyes to the reality of where I am. The beams of light peering through the barred windows, the voices of the fellow inmates, and the clanking of doors being locked help me recall the beauty of family and home. Even though these prison walls surround me, I know that God’s love also surrounds me and will sustain me each day I am here, when I leave this place, and beyond.
