This doctor is the best that there is
He peeps over dark framed spectacles
Penetrating eyes
Rivet me to the spot
Searching
Scanning my comprehension
“You do fully understand don’t you?”

“I understand!
You, the doctor, the best that there is
Will take my son to a distant land
Of phantom sleep and silhouettes
Where shades of night
Will ripple, surge
Undulating randomly
Striving for control
Yes Doctor
I understand!”

“Induced slowing is crucial
Vital to success
Without it we grope in the darkness
Of grey matter
Maladjusted
Firing at random
Causing havoc
Are you sure you fully understand?”

“Doctor I fully understand
Tell me the best scenario
Wait -
Tell me the worst
What if …”

“A seizure free life is the aim
I’m legally obliged to inform you of
The stakes
With this type of surgery
Things may not work as we plan
On odd occasions we have found change”

“Change?
What are you saying Doctor?”

“You need to be aware
Of … possibilities
Change in
Character
Emotion
Intellect
But hopefully …”

“Thank you so much for your time
Doctor you’re the best that there is
But in truth you frighten me
Your skills are renowned and
You’re second to none
But now
Another voice speaks
And the voice that I hear
You cannot locate with a scan or a probe

He’s speaking so clearly …
‘Will you trust me
With the child
The child that I gave you
The child that I love
The child that brought you
To your knees
Before me in prayer’

His healing is waiting
His methods are sound
For good or for bad
Whatever He chooses
Whatever His plan
I accept

So Doctor of minds
And mysterious things
Your expertise I decline

I will follow His leading
With Him there’s no error
The outcome secure
I abandon my cares to His charge
Whatever the outcome
I abandon!

Doctor
Your skills are a gift
You’re the best that there is
But you meddle in uncharted waters

Now if you’ll excuse me
I need to refer
To the source of all wisdom
The highest
The creator
Of cerebral matters”

Do you understand Doctor?
You do fully understand
Don’t you?

Oh my goodness...I got chills going up and down my arms and spine! How intense...and how true this is. The Lord is the greatest Physician of all, and the Master of healing.

Beautiful poem, powerful message...and an incredibly talented writer. Thank you for this gem.

God Bless~

Awesome! I love everything about this - congratulations!! I've not been in these shoes, exactly, and yet have faced similar hard medical decisions with similar outcome. You did a great job capturing the realities and the emotion/insight linked to them.
