Sprouts and swirls like a growing vine,
Safe inside my yard,
But grows tangled until
The words thirst for paper,
Quenched at my fingertips.
At the mercy of the reader,
My words risk baring their soul.
If I am honest,
My heart will spread across the page;
All the joy I carry,
All the pain I conceal,
All the hope I consume
Will scatter across written thoughts
Like seeds tossed in a garden, but . . .
Watch out for sparrow thieves!
I risk rejection;
. . . my story is slush?
I risk offending someone;
. . . friends no more.
I risk confusion;
. . . explanation not included.
But I’m called to love,
Use gifts for His glory,
No matter the challenge.
Lord, let my words
Carry joy to the sorrowful,
Comfort those in pain,
Give hope to the hopeless.
If I risk my reputation,
Reveal mistakes and failures,
My life’s mold and mildew,
Some might relate
And smile . . .
Laugh at life for a while.
Lord, let your heavenly words
Shower over me,
Mingle with
My imperfect,
Sometimes awkward,
Sometimes twisted words,
Plant a seed of salvation
In readers’ hearts.
Then my words,
The Gardener’s tool,
Can change lives,
Or even a life;
One saved life merits the risk
Of tangled words
Escaping the safe place in my yard
To cross the pages.
