The currency of egos
Is popularity;
I spend my life to earn it,
To squander on a spree—

The wealth of the celebrities
Is the core of every dream,
Where every look of praise—or envy—
Inflates my self-esteem.

My town becomes Las Vegas,
The center is the game;
I gamble everything I have
To win myself a name.

But if I spend my friendships
To win prosperity,
What will I do when fame comes knocking
And ’tis time to pay her fees?

The marketplace is all a sham,
A ritzy masquerade;
’Cause I could win the biggest jackpot
And joy would still evade me—

In the market of what really matters
This currency is dead,
A semi-trailer full of fame
Might buy a crust of bread!

The applause that greets the superstars
May fill my heart with greed,
But when reality emerges
’Tis love I really need.

Clever and well written piece.I really liked how powerful this was, with pertinent points about fame throughout. The last line wrapped it up securely.

I enjoyed this very much. Thanks.

God bless~

It's like you are a magician with words, how you can slice the truth in two, with flowing, delicate grace.

And I loved the title.

I really like the meter and flow of this piece. The only thing that hung me up, and probably nobody else, is that in one verse you refer to fame as a debtor that you have to pay and in another as a form of currency. I realize that's probably petty, but it made me go back and re-read that part to make sure I understood, and by then it had interrupted the smoothness of the piece. I'm probably just too literal for poetry. :)

Nicely written, and a great message at the end. Love the title.

Love it! This is my favorite line:

A semi-trailer full of fame
Might buy a crust of bread!
