TITLE: A Love That Captures
By Amanda Brogan

Dear Rich,

I must say, your offer intrigued me.

For so long I felt myself falling for you. So taken by your charm and your borderline egotistical confidence. So enchanted by your name brand leather jackets and all the latest in suits and style and fashion. So lost in the imperceptible pull you had on me swimming in a sea of possibility of all I could have with you.

All I could have

I could have a new dress every Friday night. The kind that would sparkle and cling to my figure and emanate with feminine grace and poise. And jewelry to go with it of course. Never would a fake gem be found on my finger or hanging from my neck. You would see to that.

Wed ride in a limo just to see a ballgame and always have VIP tickets to every concert I want to attend. Every one.

Wed travel overseas to London or Scotland or maybe explore the jungles of Madagascar. Wed kayak down the Amazon (whether they use kayaks there or not) and climb to the top of an Aztec temple.

Youd buy me a Mustang for my birthday and a private jet for our anniversary. But Id never have to drive, of course, because Id have a chauffeur in that marvelous car who would drive me anywhere in the country at my slightest command. Anywhere I wish.

Our exotic mansion would showcase priceless antiques on every wall, with maids and butlers shuffling through the corridors, awaiting an opportunity to serve us iced tea or lemonade on the open-air balcony. Wed save lunch with the president for extra special occasions.

I must admit, its all that anyone could want. More than most would dare to dream for.

But Rich, I have to tell you, my heart belongs to another. It took him some time to catch my attention with you around, but catch it he did.

It wasnt his flashiness or fame or fancy apparel that captured my curiosity. Rather, it was a different kind of confidence that drew me to his presence. A confidence that could have the world but doesnt need it. A gentleness, a patience, a joy, a peace a love.

Hes a rare discovery. A man who seems to own everything, yet doesnt hesitate to give it all away. A man who could have an army of fans, but instead prefers a few true friends. A man who may not buy cars for each of his friends but he would die for them.

And the crazy thing is: I know he would die for me.

I know that he would trade all the wealth in the world just to call me his own.

And Ive realized thats the kind of man I want to spend my entire life with. Not because he can spoil me with trinkets and treasures but because hell treasure my heart. Not because he can take me to fantastical new lands but because all Ill ever need is the place by his side.

I wont mention his name, but I think you know who he is. I think everyone knows.

Im sorry, Rich. You offered me everything, but Id rather have nothing to have him as my everything.

I hope you can understand. Someday, perhaps, you too will learn to give up everything in order to gain it.

This is great. Love the contrast between what she could have in this world and the love she could have for eternity. A perfect closing signature.

I loved this! You snagged me from the beginning with humor, spum me around with fantasy, and then stuck me in the heart with the incomparable love of Christ. Whereas I started reading with a chuckle, I finished the last sentence with a wetness in my eyes.

This is a super clever take on the topic. I've read a few stories about the person Rich, but I liked how his personality fit his name. That really pushes the message home.

The only red ink I might offer is parts of it (the first part mostly) didn't feel like a letter to me but more of listening to someone. Can't tell you which words or phrases made me feel that way, just that it did.

This is a well-written piece and there is no other groom than Jesus! Oh how all humans pale in his comparison. I could feel your genuine romance with God as the descriptions are so vivid. I just completed a bible study about Jesus being our bridegroom. Your story made me think of the different messages in the study. You did an excellent job with this.
