the pile before me grows
achievement upon achievement
glowing accolades flowing my way
degrees upon degrees
posted for all to see
decrees of sought for praise
jobs turn into career become profession
become awards and plaques and decay
before my eyes as sight gives way
to wrinkles around eyes
questions plaguing the path
to the peak of desire and human praise
the lightning bolt sears the pile
shockingly easy how it ignites
into flames and disappears
remaining in the smoky debris
a glow emitted from the dying embers
of all the praised successes
the glow is a reflection of the Creator
image imprinted upon His creation
the crowning achievement
illuminating my strivings
not so high as I imagined
but low and woefully missing the mark
the Cross that consumes the dross
renders not my achievements meaningless
but exposes them to new light
recast from an idol
into a gift and given back
as a love offering refined by fire
