When I tell people Iím an engineer
Metamorphosing into a teacher,
They look at me like Iím crazy,
As if I am a butterfly
Wrapping myself in a chrysalis
To become a caterpillar
As I step down
The ladder of success.
But I am not one of those
Who dig deep into stone,
Looking for arteries of gold
Or veins of silver;
I choose to reach for the sky,
Over the treasures of the earth.
I do not count success
By the number of dollars Iíve earned,
Or the laurels of status
A greedy heart might claim.
I seek to be the gentle hand
Who nurtures the newborn buds,
Who tends the opening blossoms,
And the vinedresser
Who guides the growing creepers.
If I can change a single life for good,
Then I will know
I have achieved something
That made my life
