Foods, Feuds, and the Pursuit of Peace

Betwixt and Between
One fat, one lean
Decided to change their diet.
What happened next
And several months hence
I never tire of telling it.

Betwixt followed advice
To exchange salt for spice
And to eat all vegetables green.
He avoided all carbs
And earnestly resolved
To make exercise a daily routine.

Day one came and went
And never a hint
That he would not succeed.
For one baked potato
He used one pat of butter
“That’s enough,” he chose to believe.

For two very long weeks
It was really quite neat
How Betwixt stayed on a very strict diet.
Until one fine day
Quite haply by chance
He found a new diet and tried it.

Day one then two
And never a clue
That he could not succeed.
With careful attention
To all that he ate
Of broccoli, spinach and peas.

Between chose his diet
And quickly decided
To take on high calorie foods.
With nothing to lose
And much to gain
He ate all that he possibly could.

For a very long time
Whenever they dined
They enjoyed perfect harmony
Until one day
A dispute arose
The two just couldn’t agree.

Each day they squabbled
As they sat at the table
When eating meat came up for question
It could be asked,
And easily so
How they managed to avoid indigestion.

And then one day
In the midst of the fray
Their quarrels suddenly ceased
For each had discovered
And showed to the other
Two perfect solutions for each.

A truce for each rival
Came straight from the Bible
Eat what you like, meat, potatoes, or veggies
Just don’t forsake love
“For the sake of food,
But pursue that which makes for peace.” (Romans 14:19-20)

Ahh, the fueds of foods go back to the farthest reaches of history.

Great use of this week's topic. I loved the characters, their attitudes (I could picture little wrinkled foreheads as they quabbled), and I especially enjoyed the resolution at the end.
