He announces to the world
That he is
Slightly embarrassed
About how devoutly Christian
He once was
Narrow minded
Fundamental
And quite a bit scary
He held to the truth
Living in the extremes
Now he has moved
To what he thinks is
Safer ground
He cringes to think
Of times when he prayed
Expecting God
To give him strength
What nonsense
As if God were concerned
About him
With people starving and
Dying on the other side of the planet
God looks in their direction
Not his

The truth is
Someone drew him aside
Quietly
And told him
To tone it down
Warned him
Belief in God
Is not cool
His boss disapproved
Of his piety
His colleagues didn’t like
His “Good News”
The Bible
In his pocket scared people

A crisis of faith?
He feared man more than
He feared God
And swapped the narrow gate
For something wider

Author’s Note: In 2010 a prominent Christian athlete spoke of the impact of losing his faith.

Oh, the truth and the sadness of this. So well written, it makes your heart ache with its reality. Thank you for sharing this sombre challenge.

Very sad that he was swayed. Very, very sad that the truth now looks like the lie to him. We must all constantly be on guard and never forget there is spiritual warfare for our souls. This carries a powerful message and was well written.

This is really moving. It reminded me of someone (also an athlete strange enough) who decided to walk away from His Saviour. Beautifully expressed and moving. Thank you

Praise the Lord that He's the God of second chances. I once knew God and then back slid and was lovingly re-called back to him. Really interesting writing! Thanks!

A sad commentary, to be sure. May we never be embarrassed to be followers of Christ.
Rachel Phelps01/24/12
Excellent vehicle for this sobering message. Well done!
