Shimmering streaks of dawn’s first daylight
Split the darkness, rent the cloud.
Broken, lost, the waiting prisoner
Viewed the lifting night-time shroud.
The sun began its daily climb
Whilst slowly slipped the sands of time.

Condemned, he heard the day awaking,
Watched each scene slowly unfold,
Viewed each act of preparation
As the inevitable unrolled.
Impending punishment observed,
He knew was justice well deserved.

Painful scenes of recollection,
Acts of theft and felony,
Lives destroyed by heartless cruelty
This, his taunting memory.
Now, as sands of time ran dry,
He feared to meet his Judge on High.

Blackened heart and rock-hard conscience
Dragged him down to dark despair.
Then, in anguish, he beheld One -
Bruised and bloodied, standing there.
Pure and holy innocence,
Arrayed in purple ‘elegance’.

Compassion, mercy, loving kindness
Flowed from sorrow’s thorn-crowned face,
Eyes that swept the thronging number
With forgiveness, love and grace,
And then He spoke, with sympathy:
‘Weep for yourselves, and not for me.’

The sands of time were almost ended
Now hanging there upon the tree,
With fading breath the dying robber
Whispered ‘Lord, Remember Me.
In your great Kingdom, where today
You’ll reign, remember me, I pray.’

The Saviour King, the Man called Jesus,
Spoke, with Love’s Authority,
A promise of such untold wonder
And hope for all eternity.
‘Today before the bright sun dies
‘You’ll be with me in Paradise.’

At once, all misery receded,
Forgiveness, cleansing, swept his soul,
In wonder, new-found faith, believing,
He glimpsed, as if through a keyhole,
Joy, fathomless, immense and free,
The streets of Heaven, Eternity.

Shimmering amber streaks of sunset ,
Sands of time now passed away,
But there beyond the reach of vision
Heaven’s glories, boundless, lay.
And there, by Jesus’ sacrifice,
One sang new songs of Paradise.

Luke 23

A beautiful poetic retelling of the story of the thief on the cross.
I like the (unusual to me) rhyme scheme and the cadence of the poem.
A lovely read!

Beautiful, musical cadence...deep, profound thoughts. I love the title and concept of the keyhole - wow, that sets the whole piece apart in my mind. Well done, and congrats on your placement!
