ah, there was a time
lingering almost lost in the mist of distant memories,
when the bob-o-links called to me from McAllister’s Field
and the scent of lilacs was carried upon the soft and summer breeze.
ah, there was a time
when the waters of Barney’s River brought forth laughter in their dance
and the barn owls filled the moonlight with solemn, mystic voice.
ah, there was a time
when the sapsuckers tapped away in their martialed beats upon the deep seasoned pines
and the willow whispered sonnets when the winds passed through her skirts.
ah, there was a time
when the midnight whistle of the harvest train brought the tales from distant realms
and the jasmine in starlit bloom was as if borne to me upon angel lace.
ah, there was a time
when the summer rains had the feel of Jordan waters, awash upon my soul
and the maple trees on Gordon’s Lane, they always walked me home.
ah, there was a time,
there surely was a time,
when all the world was as Gospel choir
and the Lord did preach to me, oh so deep and clear.
