Why did you go into the desert?
Who was it you thought you would see?
A man with a passionate message
His words fast and fiery flung free
A man in the mould of Elijah
With camel hair clothes on his back
Who feasted on honey and locusts
A lifestyle lived off the known track
His message was one of repentance
Building a path straight and true
God’s Kingdom he said was approaching
His presence was here to pursue
His scorn was spilled over the leaders
As “vipers” they were not secure
The fruit of their lives was abhorrent
The axe at the tree’s root for sure
He spoke to the lines of the legions
And charged them to be satisfied
To those with the lion’s share of money
Their arms to the poor open wide
To those who collected the taxes
He challenged to deal with their greed
To claim only what was required
And rob not from brothers in need
He promised the coming Messiah
And spoke of baptism by fire
He warned of the soon-coming judgement
With words to affright and inspire
A prophet so strange and unusual
His words were not sweet to the taste
And yet they refused to be silenced
Into us a new heart was placed
