I am a puppy.

I am the one who dashes
From heart
To heart
With adoring eyes
And eager tail,
Begging for a smile
To cherish.

The tiger thinks I waste my time;
He stalks his heartís desire
Through rugged jungles
And putrid swamps,
And scorns the thought of chasing smiles
From anyone else.

The ewe believes Iím stupid;
She relaxes in the shade
Of her own comfort zone,
Laughing at the way I run
And run,
To earn nothing tangible
In return.

Maybe they are right;
It feels like I am chasing phantoms
When I am ignored again,
Or when Iím pushed aside
By another person
Who has no desire
For the love I offer.

No one knows how much it hurts
To feel a kick, which wounds
Not my ribs,
But my heart.
No one knows the searing pain
Of being sent away,
Again,
From someone Iíve given
My very blood for.

But somehow,
I canít stop pursuing
This crazy
Waste of time.
íCause somehow,
I know
That every moment
Iíve been ignored,
Every time Iíve been kicked,
Or sent away,
Are all nothing
Compared to the joy
Of bringing one single smile
To the lips
Of someone I love.

That last stanza really got me. What a lovely piece - and a reminder to ALL of us.

Aww, touching poem. It's amazing how puppies can tug at the heart and so readily forgive injustices.

This is delightful. A read that lifts the heart and causes a smile. Thanks for sharing both and congratulations on your EC!

Adorable doesn't begin to describe this "Puppy" and his attitude. I loved the thoughts of the tiger and the ewe. Great work! Congrats on your Editor's Choice!
