For every inhalation
an exhalation-
what once was empty,
billows and then lets go.
That first breath
a moist initial tidal wave
blown out in bubbles
of briny amnion.
Inspiration
followed by expiration
in myriad voice expressing
music of words and sounds.
Cry and chuckle
singing and laughter
giggle and gasp
Cough and wheeze
sneeze and whistle
guffaw and whisper
Murmur and shout
titter and tee-hee
mumble and moan
Chortle and cackle
lament and yelp
hoot and howl
Instruct and teach
talk and speak
chide and rebuke.
Twitter and roar
whimper and weep
keen and bawl
Muse and hum
holler and bellow
lecture and reprimand
Sigh and simper
grumble and grouse
mourn and comfort
Until it comes to the end
when breath comes ragged
in gulps and halts
or barely at all
When that last soft exhale
blows out so slowly over the shore,
a wave leaving for unseen horizons
never to return again.
