I’m itching for a smile?
And I just longed to catch your eyes
When you had gotten riled?
Some people have collected rocks,
And others, butterflies;
But I have always searched for stickers
To cherish as my prize—
I’ve seen the kids who win them freely
And trash them carelessly;
But I’m the one who seeks approval
And finds it out of reach—
The smiley stickers others earn
Are traded for delights;
But if I had earned one, I would keep it
Until the day I died!
A little star would warm my heart
Beyond all other treasures;
If I could be outstanding once,
I’d cherish it forever.
What must I do to win approval?
How can I claim a grin?
I’d give my blood for just a chance
That I may enter in—
I’d swap the world, to taste a love
That sees past all my flaws;
’Cause all I’ve wanted, all my life,
Was hearing your applause.
