Who is this God we pray to?

We rub a lamp three times
And chant our petitions,
And then, when we don’t get the handouts
We have coveted,
We get angry at the genie
Created in our image.

We play games with fire,
And then curse God
When we get burnt,
And the pain doesn’t disappear
Instantly.

Maybe if we just
Rub the lamp a little harder,
Or rub it four times, or five,
We’ll get the candy
We tantrum for.

Or maybe if we play our games with God,
Trying to twist him
To fit our rules,
He will someday give in
To what we want.

Or maybe
God never was a genie,
And His dreams for us
Are bigger than watching us
Lick lollipops.

Does God set banquets before us
Only to snatch the feast away
As we reach for a bite,
With drool dripping
From our lips?

Or does he dare to give us
The love we really need,
Refusing to give His children the poison
We’ve been begging for?

This poem took my breath away... how astute... how insightful... how relevant to where we are. I think you have a message for the masses with this poem. (And quite probably a winner as well.)

What insight is incorporated in this poem! Great writing!

This is so true, and makes us think. I had written one similar to this, actually it's a song, but was trying to put it more into poem format. How sad that we treat our heavenly father, our creator like a genie, coming to Him with greed and our own concocted expectations when He knows better. Thank the Lord that He doesn't always give us every wish we blindly desire. Thank you for your candidness and making it into a well written free verse. Love this!Lord bless you.

This is an impressive piece of writing, insightful, very readable and very convicting for those of us getting complacent about our prayer life.
