Tiptoeing through the annuals,
Trying to avoid,
The wisdom that lurks here.

Folks declare 'history doesn't repeat itself'
And yet, through my own eyes,
I see it happening

People killing people
All over something silly
Whether it be a skin color, a race, or a religion

Genocides repeating
Circular motions
While the past eras all scream...

STOP AND LISTEN!

What stops us from pausing?
To take a breath,
To cool our fiery tempers

What stops us from listening?
To hear what is being alleged--
And maybe work out the differences

What stops us from thinking?
To consider the outcomes
The ones that will impact eras that is to come.

After all,
We are shaping their world
Their voices add to the outcry

STOP AND LISTEN!

A girl is born
Destined to become a doctor
But her potential is never realized

Sold for a year's wages
Because she is from the wrong lineage
Only good for one thing—hard labor

A boy is born
Destined to lead his people
But he cannot

He is of the wrong creed
Orphaned and abandoned
Making due from day-to-day

STOP AND LISTEN!

Spoon fed hatred and revenge
It's their only way to survive
Unless, we listen to the era's past wisdom

So now
It is your turn, my friend
Are you listening?

Because you see
Our own future depends
On our listening skills

So take a moment
To stop and pay attention
To the world around you.

What a sad accounting of our world.

What an important lesson.
This was well written and thought provoking.

A very important message, and related very well. There were a couple of grammar problems which a tiny bit of editing would overcome...and would be needful because this is well worth reading!

The past doesn't repeat itself only if we're smart enough to make sure we correct our mistakes and educate the next generation. This is beautiful and done so well.
Melanie Kerr 02/15/11
A good poem, I appreciated the passion that you communicated. I think the use of the word "destined" was possibly the wrong word unless they did become the doctor or the leader - but doesn't seem like that.
Lollie Hofer 02/15/11
What a powerful message. I liked the format and flow of the poem as well.

Your visuals of wasted potential are poignant. Well done.

Has the sound of the African American preaching tradition - like a hammer ringing on an anvil, refrain after refrain.
