Flaming candles dance and sway
Mesmerizing me - the yearly message
Spelled out beneath them -
Resonating refrain of salutatory song
All - elicit a mind’s eye vision
Of marking time -
Grains of sand sifting down a narrow neck
Piling one upon another quickly
Mounding into dunes within the glass –
No one can count them one by one.
Swiftly slip-sliding through the gap
Surrendering to gravity each is
Pulled relentlessly downward, downward -
No one can stop their flowing.
How powerless they are -
Uncontrollably at the mercy
Of eternity’s inimitable calling -
No one can fathom the mystery.
Who can capture even one
And restrain it from the precipice
To stop its course, its destiny? Like air -
No one can grasp a single molecule.
Yet - because God the very God,
Who made the sand, the measure and me,
Because He holds all our years in His hands
And numbers the grains contained within
No one need count anything but Him
With one swift breath I heave a sigh
Quenching candle flame - each marking
Over thirty-one million sand-seconds -
A year of my earth birth life –
A mere nanosecond of all eternity
Worth the celebration
